  • Don't forget to pack masks and antibacterial gel when you travel to Greece!

  • An obligatory element of your suitcase should be cream with a high SPF filter - a minimum of 30. The Mediterranean sun can be hurtful - so also pack a soothing after-sun lotion, for example with panthenol.

  • It's hard to imagine a holiday in Greece without relaxing on the beach, in the sea or in the pool - so be sure to pack a quick-drying towel and a change of bathing suit.

  • A waterproof beach bag, flip-flops and sunglasses are a proven way to enjoy your vacation.

  • A durable power bank will come in handy when you take hundreds of photos of picturesque architecture, ancient monuments or sunsets on the beach.

What should you eat when visiting Greece?

Apart from beautiful beaches, picturesque architecture and world-famous monuments, Greece is characterized by its delicious, unique cuisine. If you like to discover new flavors while traveling - you will not be disappointed!

  • One of the most famous snacks that you must try while following the vast culinary map of Greece is dolmades. It's meat or vegetarian stuffing wrapped in grape leaves, usually served cold, with lemon juice and olive oil.

  • Moussaka is one of the most popular Greek dishes in the world. It's a casserole made of potatoes, minced meat and eggplant.

  • Kleftiko is a slightly less popular dish that will be appreciated by all lamb meat fans. The meat, baked in parchment, is juicy, moist and aromatic. They are usually served with potatoes and fresh vegetables.

  • If you like sweets, be sure to try galaktobureko! This is a shortbread filo pastry stuffed with vanilla cream.

  • Instead of a slice of pizza, the Greek idea for a quick lunch on the go is a slice of spanakopita, a cake with feta cheese and spinach.

  • Fava is sometimes called Greek hummus. It's a delicious pea paste, served with olive oil and lemon juice, often as a side dish. On the other hand, the popular baba ghanoush paste is reminiscent of the Greek melitzanosalata, i.e. eggplant paste, but without the smoky taste (known from baba ghanoush).

  • Ouzo has its loyal fans as well as huge opponents. If you are not afraid of the taste of anise, be sure to drink ouzo (necessarily with the addition of water, which gives the drink a milky color) with hospitable Greek hosts. Ouzo is usually drunk with foods with a strong, distinctive flavor, such as seafood. If you are not a fan of such an intense aftertaste of anise, and you want to try the local alcohol - go for Metaxa - Greek cognac. You will also find anise in it, but in the company of many other herbs, which mask its taste a bit.

How much money should you take with you?

The budget you need to plan for a trip to Greece depends largely on whether you are going to a popular tourist resort or choosing to travel on your own to less known areas.

  • The cities crowded with tourists are quite expensive - for a dinner in a restaurant you will pay about 10-15 euro. In the smaller ones you will get a meal for around 8 euros. It is also often possible to buy a larger meal, which includes starters, main courses and dessert, and sometimes drinks for around 20-25 euro.

  • Entry to the archaeological site costs around 12-15 euros.

  • An iced coffee costs around 3 euros, and a bottle of mineral water in a tourist town - around 1.5 euros.

  • If you plan to rent a car to explore mainland Greece or the islands on your own, you'll pay around 20-40 euros per day for a mid-range car hire.

Safety

Greece is considered a relatively safe country and the local people are helpful and friendly. Remember, however, that in popular resorts or large cities we can run into pickpockets or fraud attempts.

  • Before we decide to buy “attractive” souvenirs or tickets for a given attraction, let's compare the price in several places.

  • At stalls and shops for tourists, you can often meet the fact that the staff will talk to you in your language, to get your sympathy, and persuade you to buy more products.

  • Let's not keep a phone, camera or cash in plain sight.

Useful information

  • While in Greece, it is worth checking the offer of cruises - tourist ships for a small fee can take us to the nearby islands, where we can spend the whole day and return to our hotel in the evening.

  • Organized, full-day tours are often very expensive - a more profitable option may be to rent a car and visit the places or villages that interest us.

  • Local museums and chapels are amazing, and at the same time not too expensive attractions that are worth visiting - and we can learn about the unique history of Greece and feel its unique atmosphere. Remember to pay attention to the markings in front of temples and chapels - sometimes it is necessary to cover the head, shoulders or knees before entering.

  • Let's choose small, family restaurants - not only is the cuisine in them much better than in large, popular, tourist pubs, but also the hosts will probably treat us with home-made delicacies, alcohol and tell us a bit about the dishes we try.

  • Let's not limit ourselves to just visiting the largest archaeological sites - they are crowded and quite expensive. It may turn out that there are less crowded, and not less attractive ones, close to our place of residence.

Regardless of whether we decide to go on an all-inclusive holiday on one of the Greek islands or visit the local monuments on our own - holidays in Greece will definitely be unforgettable!
